Ireland squad for T20 world cup 2012

Cricket Ireland have named their final 15-man touring party for next month’s ICC World T20 Championship in Sri Lanka. Left-handed opening batsman William Porterfield has been retained as the skipper of the experienced Irish squad announced today, Friday, August 17, 2012.

Majority of the players named in the squad, announced today, have played in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup, in West Indies in 2010. The only three players who were not part of the 2010 World T20 squad of Ireland are Tim Murtagh and Max Sorenson and Stuart Thompson. Thompson, the 21-year-old all-rounder is the only uncapped player in the contingent.

The Ireland squad will be without likes of John Mooney. The 30-year-old Dublin-born all-rounder is battling two finger injuries, a dislocated thumb sustained during a match against Afghanistan last month, and a fractured finger picked up over the weekend while fielding in Irish club cricket. The latest injury would not heal in time for the start of the mega event, as the player is in a splint for 12 weeks.

Ireland have been placed in Group B, with West Indies and Australia, whom they will play in their tournament opener in Colombo, on September 19.
