World T20 2012: India Team Preview

Since winning the inagural World T20 2007, Indians have failed to repeat the show, losing all the matches in supers eights rounds of 2009 edition and 2010 edition. This year in Sri Lanka where they recently imposed their supremacy, will they be able to perform better? Here’s India's squad expected to bring some joy to fans back home..

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir form one of the best opening combinations for India and they'll be expected to set the platforms against the new ball and powerplays, backed up by in-form youngsters Virat Kohli and then Suresh Raina.

Yuvraj Singh, the only batsman hit six sixes in an over in T20s, will be India's finisher once again with captain MS Dhoni. Manoj Tiwary has worked on his bowling and has also shown better form than Rohit Sharma. These two will be fighting for a solitary position in the middle order, if any, provided team management doesn't go for a five bowler gameplan.

Irfan Pathan has finally cemented his place back in limited overs formats and he'll be a valuable player if Indians are to do well in the tournament. Irfan can swing the new ball as well as make some important runs down the order. He may also be given the role of pinch hitter once in a while, depending upon the opposition. Indians are placed in Group C with Afghanistan and England.

Indian bowling has come under criticism in recent times, not able to make any real impression when it's required, specially during the death overs. This time, Zaheer Khan will lead the pace attack with Irfan Pathan and IPL performer L Balaji. Ashok Dinda is a surprize pick over likes of Umesh Yadav and others.

Indian selectors seem to have given special thought to spin department for the event. To go with allrounders Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli and Manoj Tiwary, they've also included as many as three fulltime spinning options in R Ashwin, Piyush Chawla and Harbhajan Singh. Piyush Chawla was part of 2007 world t20 squad as well as world cup 2011, so he seems the lucky charm Indian have just included for the bench!

Harbhajan Singh makes a come-back into international cricket after England tour over a year ago. he hasn't done much in domestic circuit either at home or in county but IPL 2012 season wasn't too bad for him, making runs and bowling some useful overs. Harbhajan's experience will be useful for Indians under the conditions.

Kris Srikkanth, in his last selection meeting as chairman of selectors, said: "We looked at the conditions (in Sri Lanka) for the World T20. We feel that we have picked a team that will win us the World Cup. We are very happy Yuvi (Yuvraj) has been declared fit. In 2011 World Cup, he was the Man of the Series. He is a crucial factor from India's point of view."
